We aim to develop pupils’ abilities to tackle mathematical problems with confidence – knowing which materials and methods of calculation and recording to use. We have adopted the government’s numeracy framework and each class has a daily mathematics lesson, always with a starter focus on mental calculation.  As far as possible we provide opportunities for pupils to develop and practice their mathematical skills and to use and apply these skills in practical tasks and real life problem solving. We teach the process of concrete, pictorial and abstract and promote understanding of place value through use of Numicon and bar modelling.

We understand that children learn through play and first hand experiences. Our key aim is to ensure that children have practical knowledge of concepts, for example using equipment to demonstrate place value, so that they fully grasp concepts from the onset. We provide access to online "Mathletics" so that children can consolidate their learning at home, and weekly  Maths homework is given to children from Reception to Y6. We also encourage children to practise times tables through online Times Tables Rockstars.

How to Help Your Child With Maths Homework

One of the ways we work to improve maths is to have a whole school focus on the way we teach calculation of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Click on the link below to see the calculation and bar model methods. Families who need help to understand these methods should ask teachers for their support. We will always be willing to give time to help.
