Estimation Station

spain on: Spain class

This week we have set up an estimation station in class where children are trying to say their best guess for how many items they think are in the pots.

They are then learning how to record their predictions. Once a guess has been recorded the children will count to check what the answer is and this will also be recorded next to the guess.

We have carried out estimation as an adult initiated task in Maths books this week to check the children's knowledge is secure.

Baking

spain on: Spain class

Last week in Maths we focused on language related to weighing. This week we have extended that learning and we have used vocabulary related to weighing my weighing ingredients on scales when we have made biscuits.

The children learnt about lots of different ingredients.. They checked to see which was heavier and which was lighter and we looked at using grams on the scales.

How far can you jump?

spain on: Spain class

The children have made their very own long jump competition this week.

The children have challenged themselves and have made a tall hurdle to jump over.

They had to make the competition safe, so they decided they needed mats to make sure they didn't get hurt. The children recorded their score to see who jumped the furthest to see who was the winner.

Stranger danger

spain on: Spain class

In Reception this week we are reading an important story.

Penguinpig is a story about a little girl who chats online to a stranger at a zoo. When she arrives to meet her online friend it turns out it isn't a Penguinpig at all, but a large scary bear who wants to eat her. The little girl talks to her parents who explain how to stay safe on the internet. We are talking about stranger danger in class.

Creepy crawlies

spain on: Spain class

This week in Spain class we are extending our leaning from the Hungry Caterpillar story in English to look deeper into the life cycle of a Butterfly.

Currently in Reception we have little caterpillars eating all of their food, getting nice and fat. Soon they will turn into cocoons and then into butterflies. The children are very excited! We will keep you updated with pictures on the blog.

In maths we are focussing mainly on language related to weight. The children will predict which items they think are the heaviest and the lightest and then use the scales to find out. We are also bringing an element of estimation into this activity to see if children can predict how many marbles a pair of scissors weighs.

Sports day for Spain class will be on Wednesday 5th July at 10:30am, weather depending.

This week the weather is going to be extremely hot and humid. Please send your child to school with a sun hat, sun cream and their water bottle.

spain on: Spain class

Our new topic for the last half term of school is growing. This week we have read the story of "Oliver's vegetables" and we have wrote about the vegetables we like to eat as well as writing letters to Oliver.

Next week in English we will start to look in-depth at the Very Hungry Caterpillar story. We will recite the days of the week in order and we will match them up to the food he eats on that day. We will re-write the story and change it according to the food we like.To listen to the story click here.

In Maths we will continue to look in greater depth at subtraction. This week we have used numicon to take away but next week we will look at picking out vital information in stories to work out number problems such as: "This morning I went to the shop and I bought 8 doughnuts. I ate 5 of them. How many were left?" If you could do this at home with your children this would be fantastic.

Please can I remind you that all children need a PE kit in school. Can you please make sure that children have a white t-shirt, blue or black shorts and black pumps.

In Spain class next week the children will be exploring colour mixing. We will learn how to mix powder paints and then write about the colour that we made.

In Maths next week the children will explore shapes and measures. We will name and describe shapes as well as create repeating patterns. The children will also use language related to time, money and capacity.

The children are really enjoying making models in the creative are but we are quickly running out of recycled materials for them to create with. If you have any at home that you could spare such as small cardboard boxes, plastic tubs and bottle lids we would appreciate this.

Next week there is a school training day on Friday 26th May. The last day of school for this half term will be Thursday 25th May. Have a fantastic break and we will see you back on Monday 5th June.

Next week in English the children will read "The 3 Little Pigs". We will think about how we can change the story and make up different houses for the pigs to build such as a house of playing cards or a house of grass.

In Maths we will have a big focus on number. We will look at reading, writing and ordering numbers to 20. We will also look at finding 1 more and 1 less to 20 as well as finding 10 more and 10 less to 100. The children will also recap addition and subtraction number problems as well as doubling, halving and sharing.

The children in reception have been making models in the creative area this week and they have enjoyed using bottle tops for car wheels. If you have any bottle lids at home we would be very grateful for them.

Halving and sharing

spain on: Spain class

This week in maths the children have been thinking about halving and sharing. They have been making cakes in the kitchen and halving it to share with a friend. They have also been sharing out felt tip pens as well as lego bricks in choosing time.

For the focussed task this week children were halving pieces of bread. Once we halved the bread we worked out what we needed to do to the bread when we had to share it between 4 people and not 2.

Reception Express

spain on: Spain class

Next week Reception will start to learn about a different Traditional Story. We will read the story of Jack and the Beanstalk and we will work together in groups to plant our very own beans. We will write a list of what the bean needs to grow and we will also write instructions of how we planted the bean.

In maths we will continue to learn about halving and sharing. Children will look at how to halve a slice of bread so that they get half and a friend gets half. To make this trickier, the children will share the bread between 4 people.

Now the weather in changing can we please make sure that if it is hot that the children come to school wearing sun-cream as staff are unable to apply it. Could you also send your child with a sunhat.

Thank you for your continued support,

Next week the children will continue their topic on Traditional Tales. We will read the story of "Pinocchio" next week as the children have been very interested in this tale.

In Maths we will look at halving and sharing. The children will learn how to practically half items and share them between more than 2 people. You can help with this at home by sharing items such as sweets.

Thank you to all parents who have brought in their child's Skipathon sponsor forms. Please remember that this event was to raise awareness of what the British Heart Foundation charity does and we do not expect your child to be sponsored. The event was a fantastic way to get children excited about exercise and for them to have fun.

Have a fantastic weekend and we will see you back at school on Tuesday 2nd May, after the bank holiday.

Next week we will continue with our topic on Traditional tales. In English we will have a big focus on “The Gingerbread man” story as the children are very interested in the rhyme: “Run, run as fast as you can. You can’t catch me I’m the Gingerbread man!” Children will learn about speech bubbles and they will have to think about what the characters are saying.

In Maths we will continue our learning on number bonds. Thank you to all parents and carers for completing the children’s number bond homework over the Easter holidays. The children came into class having prior knowledge of what some number bonds to 10 were. Useful websites are www.topmarks.co.uk/search number bonds. You can also find number bond songs on www.youtube.com

We need your help. In Reception we are still having a focus on setting up the classroom areas based around children’s interests. Next week we would like to set up a small world garage. If possible, could you please send in any small cars that your children no longer play with? Thank you in anticipation.

A quick reminder. As the weather improves we may have the opportunity to have our PE lessons outside. Please can you make sure that your child has a PE kit in school which includes shorts, T-shirt and pumps.

As a school we are participating in a charity fund raising event for the British Heart Foundation on Wednesday 26th April. During the day children will take part in a number of skipping events, where all children will participate. Each child will receive a sponsor card that can be filled in and sent back into school. Alternatively, school have set up a justgiving donation page, where payments can be made directly to the British Heart Foundation. The website is; www.justgiving.com/fundraising/drigh-skipathon

Look out!

spain on: Spain class

The aliens were back in our classroom this week. But this time they left their underpants behind!

The children were very excited and they collected all of the underpants from around the classroom. They saw a picture of the aliens spaceship over the playground and this promoted letter writing, asking the aliens to come back and take their pants with them.

Creepy crawlies

spain on: Spain class

Now Spring is here and the sun has stated to shine, the children have found some mini beasts! This week they found a caterpillar on the wooden bricks!

The children decided that it needed to be kept safe so they put it in a large bowl and gave it leaves to eat. They also put it in a safe place outside. This led to us reading the story of The Very Hungry Caterpillar and we painted pictures of the food the Hungry Caterpillar ate on his journey to becoming a butterfly.

What a mess!

spain on: Spain class

Late last night we had aliens visit our classroom. They had a brilliant time choosing in the areas but they forgot to tidy up their mess.

The children were so shocked when they came into the classroom this morning to see the mess that they would have to tidy up.

As a class we wrote a letter back to the aliens telling them to come back and tidy what they have been learning with.

Mr John the caretaker came to speak to the children about the suspicious lights he saw last night in the Reception classroom. Mr John asked the children to be on look-out for anything strange that they might see.

What's that smell?!

spain on: Spain class

You may have noticed a strong smell coming from the classroom doors this week.

The children have been exploring lots of Autumn vegetables that are now in season. They have been cutting, scooping, smelling and tearing parsnips, butternut squash, leeks, cabbages and cauliflowers.

We have sent home a "What is happening here" form this week with pictures of children exploring the smelly vegetables. We would like you to talk to your child about what we have done at school, using the picture as a prompt and write what they say in the first speech bubble. They might want to share their new learning with you and talk about what they were doing.

Autumn learning log homework

spain on: Spain class

Our topic when we return after the half term holidays will be "Autumn".

For over the holidays the children have been given a Learning Log homework book. This will be given out every school holiday.

As our new topic is all about the changes we see this season, the children's homework is very simple and fun! The children need to look for signs of Autumn and record it creatively in their Learning Log book.

Here is a video to help look for the signs of Autumn. Click here.

We hope you all have a fantastic half term holiday and we will see you when we return to school on Tuesday 1st November.
