A Celebration of the life of Jo Cox

Russia have had a wonderful afternoon today. We spent the afternoon talking about and celebrating the diversity of our country. The children enjoyed sampling lots of food from around the world. This included samosas and pakoras, prawn crackers, poppadoms, spiced bun, rye bread, cheese, crepes, croissants, plantain chips and other delicious things. I am sure the children will tell you about where some of the foods are from! We have taken some photos which will be uploaded shortly.

We had lots of fun!

Welcome Back

russia on: Russia Blog

I hope that you all had a lovely Easter holiday. The children have had a fantastic first week back at school and have worked hard.

They have thoroughly enjoyed looking at some illustrations they described as ‘spooky’ during our English lessons. The illustrations are from a book titled The Mysteries of Harris Burdick and we will be using these as a basis to write our own mystery stories. This week we have been focusing on the use of noun phrases and prepositions in describing what we can hear.

In Maths, we have spent the week learning about statistics and have produced our own pictograms and bar graphs. The children enjoyed finding out what the most popular choice of favourite ice cream is in Russia and compiling the information into a bar graph. Next week we will be moving onto the unit Measuring and Estimating.

In Science the children have planted their own seeds with Mrs Vertigans and will be carefully monitoring these and how they grow over the next few weeks.

Just another polite reminder that PE in Russia is on a Wednesday and Friday so please ensure children have kit in school on these days including appropriate footwear. As the weather improves we will be taking our PE lessons outside. Information about the school PE kit can be found on the policies section of our school website.

We are currently planning a school trip to Jorvik for next half term. It is hoped that this will take place during the first week back at school. If any parents are possibly able to volunteer to help then please see me, as soon as the date is confirmed I will let you know.

I have a request from Mrs Vertigans. If any of you use any small, clear plastic drinks bottles please could you save them and bring them into school on Tuesday. They will be used in Science.

Just a reminder that in the new half term PE lessons in Russia will be on Wednesdays and Fridays. Please ensure children have correct PE kit in school and appropriate footwear.

Enjoy the rest of the break. I look forward to seeing you all on Tuesday, refreshed and ready for learning.

Telling the Time

russia on: Russia Blog

This week in Maths we have been learning to read and write the time in analogue, digital and 24 hour format. Almost all the children in Russia have found some aspects of this difficult. For Maths homework, we would like the children to spend time over the holidays looking at time. You could do this in lots of different ways such as discussing the time and using questions. For example, what will the time be in 15 minutes? If I am leaving for work in half an hour what time will it be then?

On the school website, on the learning page there are links to different websites that contain interactive time games that can be played on computers or tablets.  Follow the link below to find one of the games the children have enjoyed playing in school.

Weekly Update

russia on: Russia Blog

This week in Russia we have enjoyed describing the characters Lila and Chulak from The Firework Maker’s Daughter. For SPAG homework we would like the children to write a description of a character from their favourite book! This could be a book they have chosen to read for the Readathon.

In Maths this week we have been dividing and today we looked at remainders when sharing sweets, cake and fruit. The children really enjoyed this lesson and have developed their understanding of what a remainder is.  We will be continuing to solve problems involving division next week.

Have a lovely weekend,

Miss Ainley and Mrs Runton.

Rocks and Fossils Afternoon

russia on: Russia Blog

What an amazing afternoon Russia have had. This afternoon we had a visitor to school from the Leeds Museum Discovery Centre. His name was Andrew and he came to teach us about rocks and fossils. We learnt about igneous, metamorphic and sedimentary rocks. We examined samples of each very closely using magnifying glasses. We also looked closely at some fossils. The children were amazed when they looked at pictures of what the fossils would have looked like when they were live animals. The children also spent some time pretending to be the weather! We rubbed rocks together to see how sand is formed.

Well Done!

russia on: Russia Blog

Russia worked incredibly hard last week and were rewarded in this mornings assembly with the Dojo Mascot! Well done to you all!

Today the children really enjoyed a Maths lesson in which we played lots of calculation based board games as we took advantage of our usual lesson being interrupted to visit the PTA's fantastic Room of Surprises. The children all worked on their team building skills by listening to each other and following instructions to learn how to play each game. Monopoly was definitely a firm favourite along with Mathable which is a game very similar to Scrabble using numbers instead of letters.
