Our Country

Italy on: Italy Blog

This half term we are exploring ‘Our Country’.’ The children have loved sharing memories of places they have visited within the United Kingdom and learning about all the fun things our country has to offer.

In Art we have started to look at some of the paintings Monet did of his lovely garden and we have even tried recreating one of his master pieces ourselves! We  would love to see and pictures the  children can create using Monet’s style to paint their own garden or favourite place they like to spend time.

Shapes everywhere!

Italy on: Italy Blog

We are currently exploring 3-D shapes and have discovered we can find them everywhere!

The children are becoming more confident with using the correct terminology such as; face, corners and edges.  I had to check that we were still in year one when some children started using the word  VERTICES!

Now we have identified the shapes within in the classroom can you find any shapes at home?

Abbey House Toy Museum

Italy on: Italy Blog

What a fantastic day we had yesterday!

I would like to thank all the children for their superb behaviour whilst on our school trip to Abbey House Toy  Museum yesterday, they represented our school very well. Well done!

We all enjoyed learning about the toys from the past, some of the children even said they liked them better than their toys at home.

The day went very quickly but we managed to walk around a Victorian high street and have a dress up in a fantasy land, all before heading back to the coach and having sing song on the way home.

Great start back!

Italy on: Italy Blog

We have had a fantastic start to the half term this week!

Over this half term we are learning about how toys have changed through time, the children have shown an interest in learning about the toys the adults in school used to play with. They would love to learn about any toys the grown -ups at home played with too!

We have been working hard this week to ensure we are writing super sentences and making sure we have used all the correct ingredients ( capital letters, finger spaces and full stops) in every sentence.  The children are now becoming confident doing this in their independent writing.

In PE this half term we are learning the skills for tag rugby and are lucky enough to have a trained rugby coach from the Leeds Rhinos support team leading our PE session on a Thursday! Please can you make sure your child has the correct PE kit in school.

Polite reminder than parents evening is next week please had your reply slip in to book an appointment.

Thank you,

Miss Gairn.

Balancing!

Italy on: Italy Blog

This week we have been investigating the word balance.

In PE we are learning all about gymnastic and how we can balance in lots of different ways. We have learnt to balance on different parts of our body and have even tried balancing on different equipment such as benches. This seemed a bit tricky at first but we kept going and managed it in the end!

In Maths we are using the word balanced to describe weight. We have introduced the terms grams and kilograms and will be using these terms to help us weigh ingredients for baking next week.

Lots of exciting events!

Italy on: Italy Blog

What an exciting week! We have been so busy. We began our week by investigating who had crashed their spaceship in our playground. We discovered that Beegu had landed here by accident , so we wrote letters to her explaining our school is a safe and happy place and we wanted to help her get home. We hope to her back from her soon.

Beegu was not the only visitor we have had. We had lots of fun with Cebeebies  helping them with the casting of their new play. Fingers crossed we will some of you on the big stage soon!

As it is nearly the Christmas season we are already beginning to prepare by rehearsing our Christmas carols and we decided to make sure Santa knows exactly what we would like under the Christmas tree this year and wrote him lots of letters. Now they are posted we are looking forward to reading his response!

Crash Landing!

Italy on: Italy Blog

It looks like we have had a visitor over the weekend! We explored the abandoned spaceship that landed in our playground and discovered the yellow footprints that surrounded it. Who has crashed here? Where have they gone? Keep a look out for our little visitor around school and keep the adults in year 1 posted on any sightings. This is very exciting!

Let's get writing!

Italy on: Italy Blog

This week we made the most of the snowy weather in our classroom and used it to help inspire our descriptive writing. The children have described a new planet for Winnie the witch in our English lessons, one of the planets was covered in snow just like Drighlington this week. We brought the snow into the classroom and gave everyone the chance to feel it and brainstorm the adjectives that could be used to describe it. We came up with some amazing ideas;

Freezing             Wet             White          Crumbing

              Soggy                          Fluffy           Soft

On Friday we also got creative by making our own poppies for Remembrance Day and writing our own acrostic poems for the word HERO and POPPY. The class showed a lot of interest in understanding why we celebrate Remembrance Day and participated in the minute silence at 11:00am. Well done Italy!

Space travel.

Italy on: Italy Blog

Welcome back after the half term holiday! We have already been busy doing lots of fun and exciting things since we returned.

In English we have traveled through space with Winnie the Witch to visit a  bright pink planet. The children have enjoyed describing the planet for Winnie and are becoming confident in using a range of adjectives such as 'massive,' 'beautiful' and 'gigantic'. Which planet will Winnie visit next?

Throughout our Maths lesson we are exploring 2-D and 3-D shapes and are becoming experts in identifying a range of shapes and explaining what their properties are. We now know that a point on a shape is called a corner or even a vertices!

We will be looking at how space travel has changed throughout the years this half term and the children have already began to research famous rocket launches by looking at Neil Armstrong's landing on the moon. We will continue to to research space travel and may even apply to become astronauts ourselves.

Just a quick reminder that our PE days are Wednesday and Thursday, please can all children have their PE kits in school on these days.

Thank you,

Miss Gairn

What a way to end the half term!

Italy on: Italy Blog

In Maths the children have been busy investigating subtraction and addition in maths for the past two weeks and have now started thinking about using these new skills to calculate money.

We have had a very exciting couple of weeks planning instructions and writing them. This week we have made some spooky sandwiches with some interesting fillings such as; vampire blood, stewed pumpkin, ghost slime and boil bat spread. The children enjoyed following the instructions and eating their sandwiches.

Thank you to everybody that came to parents evening I hope that gave you an insight into what happens into year 1 and if you have anymore questions please feel free to come and see me.

WOW! How amazing do all the superheros look today! We have discussed all of their powers and the things that they can't do it YET .

I look forward to seeing you all after half term.

What a busy few weeks!

Italy on: Italy Blog

What a busy start to year on we have had!

This half term we are exploring 'Our Local Area' in lots of our lessons.

In English we have turned into researchers and used written reports, video clips and used the iPads to research animal facts for animals we may find living in Drighlington. The children have loved sharing the facts they have learnt with the rest of the class by becoming news reporters and presenting a mini fact report on their chosen animal (see photos below). We are now busy writing our own report.

We have also learnt about some of the different animal groups within our science lessons and the children can now name some mammals that live around Drighlington, we will expand on this and investigate what a reptile is and where we would find them living near us.

The children have also being doing lots of investigating and explore of numbers up to 100 within our Maths lessons. They are now becoming more confident in counting in 2s, 5s and 10s, and I can tell you have been practicing lots at home, well done! This is something we will continue to develop throughout the year. The children have also enjoyed using lots of resources such as numcion, base 10, cubes and objects to explore their knowledge of numbers and are beginning to develop their reasoning and problem solving skills (see photos below).

A polite reminder that our PE days in Italy are Wednesday and Thursday and all children need to have the correct PE kit in school on these days, if you are unsure of what the PE kit should be please check the PE kit policy on our website. Some children have struggled to get their shoes and tights on and off for PE independently, please could we request that if you know your child may struggle with getting changed that you practice this at home and they wear trousers on PE days.

Most of the children are now remembering to bring their reading book everyday which is fantastic!

Thank you,

Miss Gairn.
